Fight and Flight

Recent letters to Malaysiakini set out, yet again, the plight of non-malays, the remedial step taken and the criticisms copped. See attached letters. The last is my response …

  1. My learned friend, I did not ask for an apology from you.

Nonetheless, you qualified apology is typical lawyer speak.

I still stand my ground that I did not at anytime say that Malaysians abroad do not have the right to speak. They have equal locus standi like me.

If I really wanted ex Malaysians not to speak, I would have made it explicit and clear.

The debate still rages on the internet. Honestly, I believe that Malaysians abroad do have something to contribute. If I denied it, then your accusation of me having ‘simplistic views’ are with merits.

You wrote in one of your previous post that you’re 44 (if I’m not mistaken). Being the well thought person you are, I think you would have retirement plans like your other friends (who decided to come back) If you do come back to Malaysia, I can assure that you will be welcome with open arms.

Don’t forget that people who are struggling here can be easily discouraged with the struggle here. You moved to Australia in 2004 before the GE that gave people like me hope. I hope that you can tell your fellow Malaysians there to be tactful and thoughtful about the negative vibes they send here.

Merely lecturing us on how good life in Australia is is not helpful at all.

You must understand our situation and view the matter from our perspective.

I do not want to be presumptuous here but you should have experienced the elation on the padang.

Going out to the local coffee shop the day after the election results were announce was a moment I will never forget. I saw people exchanging bright smiles on their faces that is reflected in their eyes. All this happened without them saying a word to each other. This just gives me more encouragement that Malaysia has a better future installed for us. And this includes you and me.

I mean well for you in this post and I hope you live a fruitful and happy life there. At the same time, do be constructive and encouraging to my friends back here.

    Best wishes.

  2. Hi Derrick

I didnt think (and still dont think) Malaysians lack self confident. Anyone who makes a decision to leave, will do so overwhelmingly due to a push factor.

No amount of Malaysia bashing will trigger a push for someone who is happy to stay, and no amount of Aussie promotion would trigger a pull.

I dont think these play a part. It is the cumulative experience of “had enough”.

Take it easy Derrick. We all experience elations and setbacks from time to time.

    Best wishes to you too.
