The past couple of days were cooler and I feel much better for it. This summer is now taking on the status of a relative who is well liked but has long overstayed its welcome. Be gone! Cooler weather please be here already.
Not so long ago I recall looking forward to summer so very much. That love is gone, brother.
Enough of getting on a hot sweltering tram with plebs who take water restriction advice way too far. Even a bucket and a towel would have done a world of good for many of my single use travelling companions. The heat simply causes the olfactory assault to descend rapidly into quite literally, gutter level. Except that it rises and wafts through the cars. On cold winter mornings and nights, you could sort of make out that the gases are inert and huddle around the issuer a lot closer. They stay safely with the offender. Winter please hurry along.
Enough also of that suit jacket being left on the coat stand on Monday mornings only to be removed on Thursday nights. That suit jacket is often way too hot for donning on the aforesaid trams. Those gases tend to require a lot more trips to the dry cleaner. Absent the jacket the typical business shirt is not up to the job of hiding the ever more prominent roll of prosperity across the midriff. I want a nice woolly jumper to camouflage the fat and remove all remaining doubts by a smart jacket.
Enough also, of that sharp change getting in away from that dry harsh and glary heat outside and stepping in to a very cool house (well chilled by the evaporative cooler which has been running for a few hours). The initial suction by the very contrasting chill always takes a few minutes to ebb before the soothing effect of the cool air to kicks in. It can be unpleasant, albeit for only a very short while.
Most of all, enough of those warm or even hot nights where sleep is fitful and the wife leaves a space in bed between she and I which is approximately the size of the Gobi. You cannot have a glass of wine before you retire because the heat ensures you are in no mood for it. You may be in a mood for a white but a white is less enjoyable by itself, without any food. It is not for me a beverage to settle down for the night.
The long hours of light aside, I have had enough of this summer. O Winter, Winter, wherefore art thou Winter?
